Sit back and journey through space in a planetarium show! The Planetarium also has a ASH Warped Media fulldome projector that showcases fulldome show offerings. Planetarium show offerings are on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and during certain Monday holidays and school vacation weeks. Planetarium show tickets are recommended to be reserved online as availability is limited. Please CLICK HERE to purchase planetarium show tickets and for more information about show offerings. Planetarium shows lasts approximately 30 minutes. \nPlease note: The Planetarium is only open during showtime.  Groups of 15 or more must call in advance to schedule a private planetarium show\, as large groups cannot be accommodated during public showtimes. Private planetarium shows are subject to availability. Private Planetarium shows ($150 up to 25 people\, each additional $6 per person) and school field trip programs are available.  Contact the Museum’s Education Department at 401-680-7223 to arrange your visit. \nIMPORTANT PLANETARIUM SHOW GUIDELINES:\nTickets are recommended to be reserved online\, including for Museum Members. DESCRIPTION:Free Monthly Soil Testing\nApril 4\, May 2\, June 6\, September 5\, October 3 from 10 AM-1 PM\nDuring (Free) First Saturdays at the Botanical Center in Roger Williams Park\nWe’re excited to partner with URI’s Master Gardener program to provide free pH testing again this season. Testing your soil is a good way to learn more about the dirt under your feet. Healthier soil means healthier plants\, which you really want to focus on when planting fruit and vegetable gardens. (We’re looking at you community garden plots!) In city environments\, it’s especially important to know whether you have toxins in your yard before planting anything edible. High toxin levels are fairly common in our neighborhoods due to Providence’s industrial history\, but we can work together to improve soil health! \nTo collect your soil sample: \n\nGet a small clean shovel and a container.\nDetermine the area you want to test. Dig at least 6 inches down and place soil in your bag.\nCollect soil from several spots and mix it all together.\nDry the soil sample. Spread the soil out on newspaper or a paper plate.\nRemove any stones\, roots\, and other debris.\nFinally\, put about one (1) cup of the dry\, mixed soil into a clean plastic or paper bag. Label it so you know where it came from!\nBring it in. We’ll test the pH on site\, evaluate texture\, and give you recommendations to improve it.\n\n2026 Soil Testing Schedule at the Botanical Center: \n*Every (Free) First Saturday from 10am-1pm. Admission is free for Providence Residents every first Saturday of the month. Soil testing season at the Botanical Center takes place March through October. *No Soil Testing in July or August

DESCRIPTION:Drawing Wild From the Collection\nThe following Mondays\, 1-4 PM:\nJanuary 5\, February 2\, March 2\, April 6 & May 4\nRWP Museum of Natural History and Planetarium\nYou will have the opportunity to discover\, or rediscover\, the fascinating collections during this private program exploring the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium in Roger Williams Park. Bring a small easel or chair and your drawing or painting materials\, and choose your subject from the collections of birds\, bears\, lions\, and Oceanic artifacts. Museum staff will also select some special “guests” from the museum vaults to display. During the program\, the instructor will circulate for those who wish feedback\, and at the end of the session\, attendees will gather to view and discuss each other’s work. Museum is closed to the public during this program. \nProgram fee: $35 per adult/ $30 for museum members. Pre-registration required.  \n \nPermitted Materials: You may bring the medium of your choice — charcoal pencils\, graphite\, colored pencils\, pastels\, or watercolor (please\, no oils or acrylics).  All skill levels are welcome to participate\, high school age and older. Capacity is limited\, so sign up early to guarantee your spot. \nINSTRUCTOR:\nKATHY HODGE: Kathy Hodge attended RISD and has a BFA in painting from Swain School of Design. She has been working in oils and charcoal for over 30 years\, has exhibited widely and was awarded the 2017 Fellowship in Painting from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Kathy has long taken inspiration from the natural world in her landscape paintings and was appointed Artist in Residence in thirteen of our National Parks and Forests. She first discovered the museum collections when taking a museum class and she is very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to draw from the collections. \n
