December News

Dear Park-goers,

As we wrap up another full year of engaging programming, peaceful walks, and genuine moments of connection in Roger Williams Park, we’re taking a moment to reflect on all these things we’re thankful for – and all the ways we’re excited to see the Park sustain and foster community next year and in many years to come. Even when the world outside can seem bleak, the Park serves as a respite and a place to recharge, thanks to the beautiful scenery and the neighbors we meet on any given visit to the Jewel of Providence!

You may have seen green Adirondack chairs popping up around the Park, which invite even more opportunities to connect and unwind with strangers or friends! These Conversation Nooks are supported by a grant from AARP, through the Community Challenge grant program, designed to fund local projects that help make communities more livable for people of all ages. Follow us on social media for locations (and tag us in any selfies you feel so inclined to take!).

With the holiday season upon us, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with friends and family. Meet up with us tonight at 6 PM outside the RWP Natural History Museum for a Moon Hike, and don’t forget to bring the family for the annual Winter Wonderland this Saturday! Whether you’re into drawing, history, reading, exercising, or just getting out of the house, there’s something for everyone this month!

People of RWP

Meet Andrew Grover!

Andy Grover, AKA the Rhode Island Brick Artist, creates LEGO models inspired by Rhode Island landscapes – including Roger Williams Park. He grew up on the edge of the Park, and has warm memories of all kinds of shenanigans, from playing hooky at the Park for “Bunk Day” as a senior at Cranston East to recreating childhood memories by sled-riding at the Temple as an adult.

“Roger Williams Park is beyond iconic as a space of shared cultural memory,” says Andy, “and I am proud that one of Rhode Island’s most sacred locales is a public good. This is my favorite kind of monument, and my kits of the Temple and the Bandstand are just the beginning – one day, we’ll get that whole scale model built!”

Gnomes at the Botanical Center!

The days may be getting shorter, but there’s no shortage of twinkling lights in the Park to keep things merry and bright! Don’t miss the Roger Williams Park Winter Wonderland event this Saturday, December 6, 12-4 PM – an afternoon of free family fun ushering in the holiday season! Winter sky shows at the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, decorated trees and festive trains at the Botanical Center, Santa visits at the Gateway Center, free admission to the lit-up Zoo, and more are all on the itinerary! Come see us at the Casino for hot chocolate and cookies from 3:30-4:30 PM before the Annual Tree Lighting at the Bandstand at 4:30.

Happenings in the Park

Give Back to the Park

None of the work RWPC does in collaboration with the Parks Department – from free programming to historic building preservation – would be possible without you! This holiday season, we’re thankful for all of our supporters, whether you volunteer, visit, or donate! There’s still time to make an end-of-year gift, and to be a sponsor of our annual fundraiser, Rosé in the Roses.
