September 2025 Providence Birding Adventure

Saturday, September 20 at 9 AM
Register online for exact location

Join naturalists from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island and the Providence Urban Wildlife Conservation Partnership for a free bird banding demonstration in Roger Williams Park on Saturday, September 20, at 9:00 am. Learn about how bird banding helps with research on the life histories and migration patterns of birds, and stay for a guided bird walk after the demonstration if your time and interest permits.

Here are some specifics:
Β· We will send our exact meeting spot to you once you register.
Β· If you are able to bring your own equipment – binoculars and field guides – please do so. We will bring some extra binoculars and fold-out field guides to share.
Β· Dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes.
Β· The bird banding area and the trail for the walk are on slightly hilly terrain and on grassy surfaces.
We acknowledge that these lands we will explore are the traditional, ancestral and contemporary lands of the Narragansett, Wampanoag, and Pokanoket nations.
We are grateful to these local indigenous nations for being the first to steward these lands and waters, and for continuing that stewardship in the present and into the future.

These birding adventures began in 2018 as part of the Urban Bird Treaty Program, and in 2019, Providence was designated a Bird Treaty City. To read more about the Urban Bird Treaty and other participating cities, visit the website and check out the Story map.

Have you seen green Adirondack chairs appearing in Roger Williams Park? With funding from the @aarplivable #aarpcommunitychallenge grant program and the hard work of @pvdparks to install them, these Conversation Nooks invite visitors to sit, unwind, and connect with neighbors and loved ones.

Find four spots along Frederick C. Green Memorial Blvd. and near the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium.

Even in the winter months, we hope these seating nooks will offer a few moments of reprieve in the outdoors when neighbors need it most.
A friendly heads up to Park-goers: Maple and Pine avenues at Cladastris Avenue are temporarily closed for approximately 4-6 weeks, limiting vehicle access to Park Avenue via FC Greene Memorial Boulevard.

This temporary closure makes way for boardwalk construction at Cunliff Lake, a public access project that will enhance recreational opportunities at Roger Williams Park!

During this period, traffic will be detoured to park entrance and exit locations at Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue and Elmwood Avenue. Drivers using the Elmwood Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to FC Greene Memorial Boulevard to Linden Avenue to Elmwood Avenue south to Park Avenue east. Those using the Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to Montgomery Avenue to Broad Street south to Warwick Avenue south to Park Avenue west.

Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain open. However, visitors are advised to follow posted signage and respect all barriers, as a crane will be active weekdays from 7AM to 3PM.

For updates and more information about the project, follow @pvdparks
