FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts at the Roger Williams Park Bandstand

Sunday, July 23rd: Red Baraat;  Workshop 5:00 – 6:00 PM, Performance 6:00 – 8:00 PM
FirstWorks Summer Beats concerts are back!

Future Funk with a World Beat

Bhangra funk is the explosive, multicultural dance music of the next generation and Red Baraat are its undisputed kings. This seven-piece “dhol n’ brass” outfit has been hailed as “the best party band in years” by NPR and “a big band for the world” by the Wall Street Journal. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide accolades for its singular sound, a merging of hard-driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy.

The band’s high-octane live shows have lit up iconic stages worldwide, from WOMAD to The White House. They’ve performed at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, globalFEST, Lincoln Center, New Orleans Jazz Fest, Olympic Games and Providence’s own PVDFest, communing with audiences in a joyful, near-hedonistic celebration of music and dance. Created with a purposeful agenda to manifest joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve.

If we can unite people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to partake in the exuberance of life through the universal language of music, then life is that much sweeter.” -Sunny Jain

Details

A friendly heads up to Park-goers: Maple and Pine avenues at Cladastris Avenue are temporarily closed for approximately 4-6 weeks, limiting vehicle access to Park Avenue via FC Greene Memorial Boulevard.

This temporary closure makes way for boardwalk construction at Cunliff Lake, a public access project that will enhance recreational opportunities at Roger Williams Park!

During this period, traffic will be detoured to park entrance and exit locations at Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue and Elmwood Avenue. Drivers using the Elmwood Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to FC Greene Memorial Boulevard to Linden Avenue to Elmwood Avenue south to Park Avenue east. Those using the Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to Montgomery Avenue to Broad Street south to Warwick Avenue south to Park Avenue west.

Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain open. However, visitors are advised to follow posted signage and respect all barriers, as a crane will be active weekdays from 7AM to 3PM.
