The Eagle is a tribute to the United States’ bicentennial in 1976.
The Eagle was funded by matching grants from National Endowment for the Arts and Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. The artist, Gail Whitsitt-Lynch, made the eagle with the ferrocement method, which uses equal amounts of metal and cement. The eagle is covered with marble dust, which gives it a sparkly appearance
As a widely-known symbol of the country, The Eagle is often the backdrop for photos for newly sworn-in United States citizens.
